McDougal Eye Center is proud to participate in a national vision program for infants called InfantSee®.  While your insurance probably covers a doctor visit for a child’s eye problems or injuries, well eye care for babies is usually not covered.

This no-cost public health program was created by the American Optometric Association (AOA) and The Vision Care Institute of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., to solve that problem.  It links a network of optometrists across the US who will provide a one-time, comprehensive eye assessment to infants in their first year of life (6-12 months), at no cost regardless of income level.  Early detection and intervention is the best way to ensure your child’s healthy vision development.

This is an ideal time to conduct an extensive eye assessment, even though infants can’t talk.  Not only is this an important time in vision and eye development, but generally babies do not yet fear doctor visits. Typically, infants sit on their parent’s lap during the assessment and find it painless and even fun.

Using lights and other hand-held objects, tests include the following:

  • Eye movement ability
  • Excessive or unequal amounts of astigmatism, farsightedness or nearsightedness
  • Checking for significant issues affecting proper vision development

While your pediatrician or family doctor might provide some of this care, the InfantSEE® program gives you access at no cost to an optometrist who has resources and instruments not available to general-care doctors.  Rest assured that you are detecting potential problems that, if undetected, might lead to learning and developmental issues later.  Vision development and eye health problems are easier to correct if treatment begins early.

Schedule your child’s free assessment today by requesting an appointment with our InfantSEE optometrist, Dr. Kevin Pugh, OD.
